Presubmit Chalk Concept Drawing

As we continue to elevate the quality of the festival, every team must presubmit a brief sketch or a picture of your design. These images should be submitted via email (take a picture and email it) to [email protected] by Wednesday, August 7th. Please include your name in the email so that we can match your team to the submitted sketch.

Hidden Puzzle Pieces

As many of you know, we are proud to donate the proceeds of the festival to Spectrum Academy, a charter school in Utah County that provides wonderful services for children with autism. An international symbol of autism is a puzzle piece. In support of the cause, we would encourage and challenge to incorporate a hidden puzzle piece into the design of your chalk art for people to search for. There will be signs around the festival encouraging onlookers to find the hidden puzzle pieces.

All artists (team members included) need to check-in at the Artist Check-In booth, which will be located on Clock Tower Road in front of the Called to Surf store at the Shops at Riverwoods (same location as previous years). There you will receive your t-shirt, chalk, artist wristband, and your space assignment. Check-in officially opens at 9 am on Thursday, August 8th. We encourage you to come as soon as you can to begin working on your piece. This will help us to create a wonderful experience for those who will be attending the festival. However, all artists must check-in by 6 pm on Friday, August 9th or your space may be given away.

Our professional artists will hold two free workshops on Thursday, August 2nd. The first workshop will be from 6:45 pm - 7:30 pm (Whitney Brown) and the second workshop will be from 7:35 pm - 8:30 pm (Rod & Justine Peterson). The workshops will be held in the Artist Breakroom. Each of these workshops will be taught by different artists so feel free to attend one session or both as the information and tips will be different. You don't want to miss out on this opportunity!

This year's Chalk the Block theme is "Hollywood."

The weather forecast is calling for hot and sunny weather. We encourage you to make sure to bring reusable water bottles that you can keep filled and stay hydrated during the festival. We also encourage you to wear sunscreen, hats, and to provide some means of shade. If you are planning on using a pop-up tent or large umbrella, we encourage you to be courteous to your neighbors around you. Also, they must be anchored down in case the wind picks up. As our host, the Shops of Riverwoods has asked us not to disturb the rocks from their decorative landscaping so please be sure to bring your own anchors. We also ask that you keep pop-up tents elevated high enough so that onlookers can watch you chalk and see your progress as it continues to develop.

Each team will receive two boxes of the professional-grade pastels to use. Solo artists will receive one box. Once all teams have checked-in, we will also have additional boxes that will be available to purchase should you require more. Only dry chalk will be allowed. We will also have a chalk trading station for you to swap chalk and the registration booth with other participants, you may trade one- for -one. If you require more chalk you may buy an additional box at the registration table for $20.

Each team or artist will receive an 9' x 16' square to chalk in. This is approximately the width of a parking stall. All must fill at least 8’ x 8’ space. Artists may come and go as you please. However, all artwork must be finished by 3 pm on Saturday for judging. Judging will likely take place around 4 pm on Saturday. Artwork will be judged in the following categories: Best in Show 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Best Use of Color, Best Representation of the Theme, Peoples Choice 1st and 2nd, Best Representation of a Master Work and Best High School 1st and 2nd.

Please be sure to wear your artist wristband, which will be provided to you at check-in. This will allow you enter our Artist/Volunteer break room where we will have water and a few goodies. It will also allow you to access lunch on Saturday. You will need to wear it for all three days.

We are very grateful for Kneaders who will be once again be sponsoring our artist lunch on Saturday. Lunch will be available from noon to 1 pm on Saturday at the Artist Break Room (please see the attached map). Only those wearing wristbands will be admitted to the artist lunch.

All artists must park in the Artist Parking Lot north of the Wynnsong Movie Theater or at the Wynnsong Movie theater. Please see the attached map for exact location. We encourage you to park in this lot so that the few remaining Riverwoods parking spots not utilized by the festival and can be used by mall patrons. We are grateful for the Shops at Riverwoods for sponsoring the venue for the festival!
